Rifampin-Resistant Mycobacterium bovis BCG–Induced Disease in HIV-Infected Infant, Vietnam

چکیده
zoonotic; cats are primary reservoirs, and humans and dogs are accidental hosts (1). However, B. clarridgeiae was recently detected in rodent fleas in China (9) and B. koehlerae was isolated from feral pigs from the southeastern United States (10), suggesting that these pathogens also have multiple reservoir species. Clarifying whether Bartonella infections in raccoons are caused by spillover from feral cats needs further study. Additional samples from raccoons and other species in urbanized and undeveloped habitats with different host species composition (e.g., cat-free environment) might enable further Bartonella spp. characterization in wildlife. We suspect urban raccoons and feral cats play a major role in Bartonella spp. transmission.

Lymphadenitis caused by infection with an isoniazid- and rifampin-resistant strain of Mycobacterium bovis BCG in an infant with IFN-γ/IL-12 pathway defect*
We report a rare case in a female infant (age, 3.5 months) with primary immunodeficiency (IFN-γ/IL-12 pathway defect) who presented with suppurative lymphadenitis after Mycobacterium bovis BCG vaccination. The strain of M. bovis BCG identified was found to be resistant to isoniazid and rifampin. The patient was treated with a special pharmacological regimen involving isoniazid (in a limited, st...

An analysis of isolates of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex was performed to determine the prevalence of bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) disease among human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected children. Speciation was done with polymerase chain reaction; 183 isolates from mycobacterial cultures for 49 HIV-infected patients were analyzed. The Danish Mycobacterium bovis BCG strain was isolated ...
متن کاملNonpathogenic SIV and Pathogenic HIV Infections Associate with Disparate Innate Cytokine Signatures in Response to Mycobacterium bovis BCG
Infections with mycobacteria, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) and Mycobacterium bovis (M. bovis) BCG, are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality for HIV-infected persons. In contrast to HIV, nonpathogenic SIV infections of sooty mangabeys are characterized by a lack of clinical disease including an absence of opportunistic infections. The goal of this study was to identify innate...
متن کاملBacille Calmette-Guérin vaccine-induced disease in HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected children.
BACKGROUND Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG)--a live, attenuated vaccine--is routinely given to neonates in settings where tuberculosis is endemic, irrespective of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) exposure. HIV-infected infants and other immunodeficient infants are at risk of BCG-related complications. We report the presentation, treatment, and mortality of children who develop BCG disease, with ...

Dear Editor, Since 1976 Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (an attenuated form of wild type Mycobacterium bovis; BCG) has been extensively used for the treatment of superficial bladder cancer. It is a safe and well tolerated treatment with rare adverse events including allergic reactions, granoulomatous prostitidis or epididymo-orchitis, disseminated infection and BCG sepsis1. Although cystitis is not an...
